Moors head to Giant Axe for the first time since September 2015 looking to improve on their early FA Cup exit’s of the past two seasons.

Lancaster City, currently 9th in the Bet Victor Northern Premier Division, stand between Moors and a first appearance in the Third Qualifying Round for the first time since 2016, when a memorable run ended with defeat at MK Dons in the First Round Proper.

Defeats at home to Gainsborough Trinity in 2017 and at Witton Albion in 2018 have seen Moors fall at the first hurdle, but a fresh cup campaign once again brings new optimism.

Lancaster made it to this stage courtesy of a 2-1 at Northwich Victoria in a replay after the two sides played out a goalless draw at Giant Axe, and head into the game on the back of a 3-3 draw against Grantham Town.

After a 4-1 win over Darlington Town on Tuesday evening, Moors will be hoping to cap off a good week with another cup success.

LAST TIME WE MET

Two goals from Liam Henderson and a strike from Anthony Peacock earned Spennymoor all three points at Giant Axe back in September 2015.

OPPOSITION

Lancaster manager Mark Fell has stated this week that the pressure is off his side as they prepare for the visit of Moors. City have started the season well and are within reach of the play-off places, but Fell believes Lancaster will be the underdogs despite Moors struggling to make up ground in the National League North.

Speaking to the Lancaster Guardian, Fell said: “It’s a great draw for us. We had some good games against National League North opposition last season in the FA Trophy. We competed well against Guiseley over two games and won and I thought we played very well against Blyth. We’re in a better position now than we were back then. We have nothing to lose, it’s a home draw and the expectation will be on them to come to us and beat us.”

City’s Player of the Month, David Norris, who boasts previous clubs such as Ipswich, Portsmouth and Leeds, has been in great form, scoring seven goals this season.  Alongside Norris is Jack Armer, who has scored one goal and claimed two assists so far this season, an impressive return for a full back.

STATS CENTRE

  • Moors are unbeaten in four games in all competitions since a 1-0 loss at Gateshead earlier this month.
  • Aside from the current top three in the BetVictor Northern Premier League, Lancaster have scored the most goals so far this season (13), averaging 1.85 goals per game.
  • However, City have conceded 13 times, more than 10 of the 13 sides below them in the division.
  • Adam Boyes has scored in each of his last three appearances, his best run in for Spennymoor Town.
  • There are currently 13 places between the two sides in the non-league pyramid.

VIEW FROM THE PRESS BOX

It’s been a week dominated by cup football, providing a welcome break after a hectic start to the league season. Tuesday saw us face Darlington Town in the Durham Challenge Cup, and it was a chance for some of our young players in the academy to get a taste of first team experience. Only four senior players were selected; Joe Atkinson, Nathan Buddle, Jake Hibbs and Gavin Cogdon, with the majority of the side being made up of Under 18 players.

Managerial duties were handed over to Andy Lowe, Lewis Dickman and Mark Scott for the evening with youth being the key word. Darlington Town would be no pushovers given their 2nd place status in the Wearside League, and that was showcased early on when Atkinson was forced into a superb save to keep the scores level. But, the young lads put in a fantastic display to cruise through to the next stage of the competition, albeit with a little help from Gavin Cogdon. The striker netted all of Moors four goals including an audacious lob from just inside the opposition half.

The Brewery Field hosted it’s second cup fixture of the week just 48 hours later when Moors’ younger generation were in FA Youth Cup action against Morpeth Town. The visitors were packed with physically strong and tough players and took a two goal lead into the break, but a spirited second half display saw Blayne Hall pull one back four minutes after the interval. A late goal finished any hopes of a comeback, but the side gained plaudits against tough opposition.

Saturday is a massive game for the football club. A run in the FA Cup would be a welcome addition to the season, with memories of the 2016 run to the First Round Proper still fresh in the minds of players and fans.
