Spennymoor Town have added two more new faces as Jason Ainsley puts the finishing touches to his squad for the 2018/19 campaign.
Goalkeeper Chris Elliott and attacker Kevin Hayes signed over the weekend and are available for selection ahead of tonight’s clash with neighbours Darlington.
Elliott, 26, left Alfreton at the end of 2017/18 and has been training with Spennymoor for weeks, finally putting pen to paper before the season opener at Chester, where he was named amongst the substitutes.
Hayes, meanwhile, joins fresh from his unforgettable FA Vase experience with Stockton Town in May, where he walked out onto the hallowed turf at Wembley Stadium. The tricky and versatile attacker is at home anywhere across the front line but was predominantly used out wide in his two seasons with the Anchors.
The 19-year-old travelled with the team to Chester and took part in the warm up, but will be hoping to land a spot in the squad for the Darlington clash tonight.
Jason Ainsley is pleased with the additions, which he feels were essential to bring competition to the squad.
“Kevin is someone we have watched several times and he has impressed every time we have seen him play. We watched him during pre-season and it looked as though we might miss out after he really impressed on trial with Harrogate Town. Fortunately for us that didn’t pan out.
“Paul Midgley was instrumental in bringing Kevin to the club, having worked with him at Stockton. Kevin can play across the forward line and just behind, so he gives us a great option. He can go both ways and is very quick.
“At just 19 years of age he says his goals are to learn and improve his game, so hopefully he’ll be able to do that with us at Spennymoor.
“I’d personally like to thank Martin, the Chairman, and Michael, the Manager of Stockton Town, for helping the transfer to go through as smoothly as possible.”
Goalkeeper Elliott started his career with Bradford City, before having spells with Harrogate Town and Alfreton last season. With Matt Gould the only ‘keeper in the squad, Elliott represents both cover for and another option to provide competition.
Ainsley said: “It was important to bring in a goalkeeper who I believe will provide competition for Matty and in Chris I believe we have just that.
“He has National League North experience and he’s very vocal. He’s a great addition and I’m pleased he chose to sign for us ahead of other clubs who were interested.”
