A late Shane Henry own goal denied Spennymoor all three points after they led ten man Salford City courtesy of Andrew Johnson’s fourth goal of the campaign.

The visitors had captain Liam Hogan sent off five minutes before the break after his strong foul on Glen Taylor was deemed worthy of a straight red card by the referee.

Johnson instinctively diverted Christopher Chantler’s ball across the box into the roof of the net to give Spennymoor the advantage with around 20 minutes to play.

A gutsy Salford outfit earned a deserved point ten minutes later when Ibou Touray’s teasing free-kick was flicked into his own net by Henry.

In a first half lacking in chances and quality, the away side carved out the best openings, with Michael Phenix twice being denied by Dan Lowson.

First, he saw his looping header tipped over, then his low shot was saved, with Lowson reacting quickly to deny Jake Beesley on the follow up.

Glen Taylor had the home side’s best opening of the first period, but his tame header was easily dealt with by Maxime Crocombe.

Taylor was involved with the red card soon after, as Hogan dragged the forward to the ground before appearing to lunge in the direction of the ball. The referee adjudged that Hogan deliberately stamped on Taylor’s leg, meaning an early bath for the Salford skipper.

Despite their man advantage, Salford continued to be the more threatening side in the second half, with substitute Jack Redshaw being denied by Lowson after he went through one-on-one with the keeper.

When Spennymoor finally managed to forge a chance, they took the lead. Jake Orrell lifted a ball in which could only be cleared as far as Christopher Chantler. The left-back fired across goal where Johnson was lurking to stick out a toe and open the scoring.

Salford continued to press and got their reward ten minutes later when Ibou Touray’s free-kick was headed past his own keeper by the unfortunate Shane Henry.
