Moors fell to a heavy defeat as Lee Connelly’s treble helped Sunderland Under 23’s to a comprehensive friendly win.
Jason Ainsley named Mark Anderson captain in a team which featured two Trialist’s and the likes of Andrew Johnson, Ryan Hall and Dan Ward.
It was Anderson, so often the creative cog when he features in the team, who created the game’s first chance.
His exquisitely lofted ball forward to the alert Adam Boyes found the timed run of the striker, but he could poke an effort onto the post after beating Ahmed Abdelkader.
The young Sunderland side took a while to warm up to the task but began to test the Moors backline, seeing effort from Benji Kimpioka and Nathan Greenwood flash over the bar and past the post respectively.
Greenwood was heavily involved as The Black Cats won a penalty 13 minutes in, collecting a ball over the top before being tripped by Trialist A as he tried to take the ball round him.
Connelly took the spot-kick, but Trialist A made up for giving the spot kick away by parrying the shot away to his left hand side.
Hall had a great chance to grab a goal when a low ball into the area found the winger, but after taking a touch, his prodded effort was tipped away acrobatically by Abdelkader.
That was to be the last Moors chance before a dominant spell from the visitors, and it was Connelly, who was denied from the penalty spot, who scored two sublime goals to put Sunderland in charge.
First he curled in from the edge of the box past a helpless Trialist A, before he capitalised on an error from the keeper to whip a stunning shot into the top corner.
Sunderland added a third just after the restart. Greenwood was played in down the left and burst past the challenge of Nathan Buddle, but after his first shot was saved, he made no mistake with the rebound, flashing a shot into the far corner.
A flurry of Moors changes which saw the introduction of Glen Taylor, Rob Ramshaw, Jamie Chandler, Chris Mason and Shane Henry, but that did little to change the immediate pattern of the game.
Connelly added his third to complete his hat-trick, swerving shot on the bounce past Trialist A from eight yards out, before his replacement, Cole Kiernan, hammered in a rebound from close range to make it five.
