Four goals from James Roberts saw Spennymoor run out comfortable winners at Northern Premier League Division One South East side Stocksbidge Park Steels.
Roberts, who joined the club from Hereford this summer, netted all his goals before he was taken off on the hour mark.
Jason Ainsley named a strong side at the Look Local Stadium on a blustery day in South Yorkshire, and with the start of the 2019/20 campaign swiftly on the horizon, Moors’ manager will now be thinking about his selection for the start of the campaign.
Moors began well in awkward conditions but were lucky to not fall behind after Carl Magnay’s loose back pass was collected by Luke Mangham. The Stocksbridge striker rounded the outrushing Matt Gould, but his effort was tame and cleared by James Curtis.
The opening goal of the game arrived shortly after and was gifted to Moors courtesy of a calamitous air kick from Steels keeper Tom Crosby. A simple pass back from a Trialist was missed and rolled into an empty net.
That fortuitous goal gave Moors a spring board to build on and they soon doubled their lead through the persistent Roberts. After a flicked header from a Steels defender sent the striker clear, he had the speed and confidence to drive down on goal before sliding an effort into the far corner.
Aside from the opening chance Stocksbridge had early on, it was one way traffic as Moors played with freedom and speed, creating chances at will.
Crosby, who was at fault for Moors’ first goal, began to make amends with a string of solid saves, first superbly denying Andrew Johnson’s snapshot from six yards.
However, there was nothing the keeper could do to deny Roberts’ second of the match which was all down to the creativity of Glen Taylor, who span his man before laying the ball on a plate to his strike partner who couldn’t miss from a yard out.
Roberts wasn’t done there as a ruthless Moors side made it four before the break, and it was created in similar circumstances but on the opposite flank.
This time, the hard work of Rob Ramshaw saw Roberts expertly side-foot a low cross into the far corner, sealing a first half hat-trick for one of Moors’ summer signings.
Rees Greenwood was introduced at the break in place of Ben McKenna as Moors picked up where they left off in the second half, adding to their healthy first half haul via another poachers goal from Roberts.
After Johnson’s cross was touched on by Taylor, it fell to Roberts who was once again in the right place to convert the chance and add to his personal tally.
The hour mark saw the usual influx of substitutes, with five new faces looking to stake a claim for a starting berth as the season begins in two weeks time.
However, the game entered a lull with Moors losing the tempo and flair which saw them kill the game off in the first half, with Taylor having the best effort of the game’s final moments saved by Crowley.
