Well-travelled central defender Kris Thackray, who was part of a Gzira United squad who qualified for the Europa League, has joined Spennymoor Town pending his international clearance.
Thackray, 30, a defender who can also play in midfield, is originally from the North East, and joins Moors having spent time in Italy, Malta and Germany with nine different clubs.
After being released by Newcastle United at the age of 16, he signed for the then Italian Serie A side Reggina, after being spotted playing in tournament for England Colleges XI.
The 30-year-old spent his first professional season on loan with Lega Pro Seconda Divisione club Monopoli, where he was awarded Monopoli`s Player of the Season.
After featuring for a further three clubs in Italy, Thackray signed for Maltese Premier Divison side Qormi, before making the move to Germany where he played for Alemannia Aachen and KFC Uerdingen.
He joins Moors having left Gzira United, also in Malta, where he made eight appearances.
Thackray was keen to return back home and felt the move to Spennymoor was the perfect opportunity: “I’ve been travelling around for a while now so felt getting some stability at the age of 30 was important.
“I hope I can add to what the squad achieved last season and feel I can bring a positive personalty to the changing room as well as hard work.”
Jason Ainsley thinks the defender’s past will help the current squad progress: “Kris has a wealth of experience abroad where he led a team to qualifying for the Europa League.
“He has great technical abilities and is a very sought-after player, so after returning to Newcastle to live, we acted quickly to secure his services.”
*NOTE: the completion of Kris’ signing is subject to international clearance.
