Ward excited for competitive challenge at Moors

In-demand midfielder Dan Ward has joined Spennymoor Town following the expiration of his contract at Middlesbrough.

Ward arrived at St. James’ Park as a 17-year-old, featuring for the club’s under-18s before becoming a fixture in the under-23s set-up.

He made 13 appearances for the Magpies’ second string in the 2017/18 season, scoring twice.

After his release from Newcastle in the summer of 2018 following four years on Tyneside, Ward made the switch to Championship side Middlesbrough on a one-year deal.

The versatile midfielder made 18 appearances for Boro’s Under-23 side, scoring three times and claiming four assists.

The appeal of a more competitive challenge was one of Ward’s main factors for joining Spennymoor. He said: “Making the step back into the mens game is something I have wanted for a while, and I feel I am ready for it.

“You can play in the friendlies, Checkatrade trophy games, but I want be playing more competitively against mens teams and playing in front of fans. That is why you play football.

“It seemed like the perfect time to come here.”

“I was really impressed with the ground, training facilities and the manager who had clearly done his homework. He was very keen to get me on board, so it seemed like the perfect time for me to come here.

“I enjoyed my time at Newcastle and Middlesbrough, and hopefully the experiences I have gained from those clubs can help me here.

“I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and getting started.”
