Greenwood aiming for fresh start after joining Moors

Exciting winger Rees Greenwood, a Sunderland graduate who has played at Premier League level, has joined Spennymoor Town.

Greenwood, 22, had spent most of his career at The Black Cats, joining at the age of eight before making his way up the ranks at the Stadium of Light.

The Gateshead born wide-man made his full Premier League debut in May 2016 under Sam Allardyce, playing 52 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Watford.

That was his only senior appearance for the Sunderland, and after his release he made the switch to Gateshead, joining at the same time as his new Moors teammate Callum Williams.

After a short stint at the Gateshead International Stadium, Greenwood moved North to join Falkirk on a one-year deal, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 defeat to Partick Thistle.

However, a change of manager saw the youngster released just under two months later.

After being without a club for eight months, Greenwood is looking forward to a fresh chapter in his career: “As soon as I was given the chance to come here I wanted to join. I’ve heard nothing but good things from several people, including some of the lads who are already here.

“I now just need to get back playing and show everyone what I can do.”

“I do see this as a fresh start. I want to get back playing as many games as I can, and the manager has had a chat with me on how he wants to use me.

“Jason sat me down and told me the plans he has for the club and where he wants to take Spennymoor, and from then I knew it was something I wanted to get on board with.

“I loved my time at Sunderland. The club made me grow as a person as well as a player, and making my debut under Sam Allardyce was obviously the best day of my career.

“In the end it didn’t work out, so I now just need to get back playing and show everyone what I can do.”
