Former player moves into the board room for Moors

Spennymoor Town has made two changes to its board structure following a stream of exciting announcements regarding the playing squad and ground developments.

Former Moors centre back Paul Johnson has joined the board as Financial Director and Adam Brown has joined as Marketing and Communications Director to complete a four-person board alongside Debra Swinburn, who has autonomy over all Legal and Compliance matters, and Tony Wilson, Managing Director.

“This allows strategic and tactical decisions to be made on an almost instant basis, which is what the club currently needs with the pace it is improving both on and off the field.”

The new pair replace Ian Walker and David Mills, who have been with the club for the last 12 months as Directors.  They helped build the club’s management team and lay solid foundations ahead of this season, including work on the ground developments currently taking place.

Brad Groves, Chief Executive, said: “I’m delighted with these two appointments, both of whom work with me at GAS.

“This allows strategic and tactical decisions to be made on an almost instant basis, which is what the club currently needs with the pace it is improving both on and off the field.”

Johnson played two seasons at the heart of the Moors Defence from 2014 to 2016 and has worked at Great Annual Savings Group (GAS) since the start of this period as a Management Accountant.  He has also been working off the pitch for Spennymoor during this time, running the club’s financial processes for the last five years.

Brown has been with Spennymoor for three years as Head of Media and PR after initially working on the social media during the infamous 2013 FA Vase-winning season.  He has overseen improvements in the club’s relationships with the North East media, the club’s owned media channels and year-on-year improvements in season ticket sales and sponsorship.  He has worked with Johnson and Groves at GAS for three-and-a-half years as Marketing and eCommerce Manager.

The pair will be giving significant amounts of time to the management of the club.

Tony Wilson has been effusive in his praise for the two departing Directors.

He said: “I would like to thank Ian Walker and David Mills for their invaluable support over the past year.  I understand that, due to their work and other commitments, that it is impossible for them to give up the time required to meet the challenges of the coming year in terms of driving revenue and improving attendances and the whole match day experience.

“Neither Ian nor Dave will disappear, however. They have committed to continue to support the Board and the club in any way they can, which we all greatly appreciate.

“Like the footballing management team and the off-the-field management team this year, the new board are under no illusions that they will face many challenges.  But they are ready to meet them.”

Johnson and Brown join Wilson and Swinburn with immediate effect and have already been preparing the club for the season ahead.
