Ten man Moors overcome the odds to earn remarkable point

match report

Tyler Forbes scored with the last kick of the game as the ten men of Moors gained a valuable and deserved point in a remarkable contest at The Brewery Field.

With the game heading into it’s final seconds, Forbes collected the ball on his chest from 25 yards before unleashing a swerving shot which beat Telford goalkeeper Michael Luyambula.

Telford led 2-1 before James Curtis was shown a straight red card for an apparent high foot, but despite Brendon Daniels extending The Bucks’ lead from the resulting free-kick, second half goals from James Roberts and Forbes saw Moors recover from disastrous circumstances.

Jason Ainsley made one enforced change to the side who thumped Alfreton 5-0 last weekend, with Mark Anderson replacing the ill-stricken Ben McKenna.

There were also places on the bench for Carl Magnay, Gavin Cogdon and Andrew Johnson, all of whom missed out on the squad a week previous.

Telford were the brighter of the two sides in the opening exchanges, going close when a surging run from Ryan Barnett saw him find James McQuilkin who fired over the bar.

The same two players combined minutes later when McQuilkin’s clever back heel tested Matt Gould, but it was Moors who were soon cursing their luck when Anderson’s low effort was smothered by Telford goalkeeper Luyambula.

In a frantic opening spell, The Bucks, frequent conquered of Moors both home and away, took the lead from a Daniels corner. Makeshift left back Ellis Deeney powered a header which crashed against the underside of the bar and behind the line.

That goal shook Moors in to life and the game was level less than a minute later when a porous Bucks defence allowed Glen Taylor too much time in the box, with the striker clinically burying a low shot into the bottom corner.

Roberts came close to spinning the contest on its head five minutes later, but he couldn’t keep his shot down after clever work from Anderson.

That miss proved costly as Gavin Cowan’s side grew back into an engrossing contest, re-taking the lead through a stunning effort from Marcus Dinanga, expertly curled into the top corner on the angle.

A tough task was made seismic ten minutes before the interval when the referee felt Curtis’ stretch to clear a ball endangered Daniels, but despite the clear uncynical nature of the foul, a red card was immediately brandished.

To add insult to injury, Daniels stepped up and bent the resulting free-kick past Gould into the top corner, leaving Moors two goals and a man behind.

With a sense of injustice coursing through the veins of Spennymoor’s players and management team, Ainsley sent the side out early ahead of the second half.

Within two minutes of the restart Moors halved the deficit. Roberts benefited from a wicked delivery by Stephen Brogan and flicked a header into the far corner, renewing belief and hope around a lovely Brewery Field.

It was one way traffic for large parts of a dominant second half showing from Spennymoor, with The Bucks failing to make the most of their man advantage.

After Taylor struck an effort into the side netting, Moors were once again aggrieved when Shane Henry’s slaloming run into the area was stopped by Ross White, but nothing was given.

There was always a sense that one more clear chance would present itself to Moors, and the common feeling was that it came and went when Taylor headed wide with eight minutes remaining, but, there was one final twist in a memorable tale.

Telford, now camped in their box, cleared a cross which dropped as far as Forbes, and after cushioning the ball down with his chest, he struck a sweet shot which flew into the corner, sparking wild celebrations around the ground.
