Mulhern adds firepower to frontline

Spennymoor have added to their attacking options with the acquisition of striker Frank Mulhern following his release from National League side Stockport County.

Mulhern, 23, began his career with Leeds United’s academy before a switch to Huddersfield Under 23’s in 2017. He then spent a year with Guiseley before a move to Stockport ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The forward was part of The Hatters squad that won the National League North title in 2019, before making 28 appearances and scoring four goals as Stockport finished 8th, marginally missing out on a place in the play-off’s.

He spent the second half of the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Boston United, scoring twice in nine appearances, including a substitute showing in the play-off final defeat against Altrincham.

After signing for the club on Tuesday morning, Mulhern expressed his delight to get the deal done at The Brewery Field.

He said: “It’s the first time I’ve seen ground today and I am very impressed with the facilities and the set-up at the training pitches is first class.

“I know a few of the lads in the squad so I’m really glad to be joining the club at an exciting time.

“I feel like this is a fresh start for me after a couple of years at Stockport County. It was brilliant achieving promotion with them and playing in front of such a big crowd, but I now want to get fit and push on with Spennymoor.

“I want to help this club achieve promotion to the National League and chip in with a few goals along the way.”

Manager Jason Ainsley is excited to get Mulhern on board as his squad for the new season continues to take shape.

He said: “Frank is a top forward with experience playing higher up, so he will offer us experience and natural goal-scoring ability during his time here.

“I’m sure he will hit the ground running here and settle in with the squad before the new season eventually gets underway. We wish Frank all the best for his time here at Spennymoor Town.”
