Moors withdraw from cup

Spennymoor Town has withdrawn from the Durham Challenge Cup due to severe fixture congestion.

The club is currently the joint holder of the cup, having reached the final with Sunderland AFC in 2019/20.  The match was postponed and never rearranged due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it was decided that the clubs would share the title for the season.

The Moors’ fixture pile-up has also been created by the ongoing health crisis.  Two matches this season have already been postponed within hours of kick off, due to opposition players and officials testing positive.

Rearranging those fixtures and filling other spare weekends have proven difficult due to clubs isolating and unavailability, leading to a stop-start beginning to the 2020/21 campaign, which has seen the Moors play just seven league games.  By comparison, league leaders Gloucester City have played 11.

Spennymoor Town’s next match is tonight vs Guiseley in the Vanarama National League North.
