Spennymoor Town has secured the services of highly rated central defender Jo Cummings from Radcliffe.
Cummings, 23, was on the radar of a number of sides but has chosen to take the next step of his career at The Brewery Field ahead of the 2022/23 season.
He made his breakthrough at Sheffield United having progressed through the youth ranks at the Blades, going on to make a sole appearance in the EFL Trophy against Grimsby Town in November 2016.
The 6’3 defender moved from his native Sheffield to join Charlton Athletic in May 2017, however, he found appearances hard to come by, making just two in two years in South-East London.
Following a short spell at Guiseley, Cummings was snapped up by Scunthorpe and joined up with Russ Wilcox’s Under-23s side in the summer of 2019.
He made an initial loan move to Radcliffe in March 2020 before joining the Greater Manchester outfit on a permanent basis in June of the same year.
Cummings came up against Spennymoor last season when he played the full 90 minutes in an FA Trophy clash in December 2021.
Joint Manager Anthony Johnson expressed his delight after securing Cummings’ signature. He said: “Our chief scout went to watch Joe on several occasions last year and the reports that came back were excellent.
“His profile is perfect for what we are trying to do here. He is 23, 6’3, aggressive and has genuine pace which is something we have been searching for in a central defender.
“He can also learn from the likes of James Curtis, Joe Tait and being coached by Steve Halford, so he has plenty of good knowledgeable people to develop at the club.
“You only have to look at the reaction from the Radcliffe supporters on social media to show how highly rated he is.
“We are delighted to have him on board and can’t wait for him to get started in a Spennymoor shirt.”
Moors TV will be speaking to Jo next week when Moors return for pre-season ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
