Spennymoor Town is thrilled to announce the season-long loan signing of Middlesbrough FC goalkeeper Max Metcalfe.
Metcalfe, 19, has spent his career to date with the Teesside club and penned his first professional contract in May 2021.
The 6’6 shot-stopper holds the prestige of representing England at Under 19 level having attended a training camp shortly after signing his pro deal.
He won the ‘Save of the Season’ for Boro’s Under-18 side for a stop against Burnley following the conclusion of the 2020/21 campaign.
Metcalfe sat down with Moors TV to discuss his move to The Brewery Field. He said: “I was speaking to people to try and get out on loan to gain some experience, and once I heard Spennymoor were interested I thought it would be a great opportunity for myself.
“I’ve been at Middlesbrough since I was in the Under-14 set-up before signing a two-year scholarship when I was 16. The journey has been really good to this point.
“There is no better experience than playing men’s football where three points matter. It’s a different game and it’s all about winning. That’s something I need at this stage.
“I had a look at Spennymoor’s performances and results last season and they managed to get a top half finish, just missing out on the play-off places.
“I’m a commanding keeper who likes to come for crosses, and I am looking forward to showing the fans at The Brewery Field what I can do.
“I can’t wait to train with my new teammates for the first time and get stuck into a new challenge.”
Joint-Manager Anthony Johnson said: “Max is someone we were made aware of through a friend of ours at Middlebrough.
“He’s very highly thought of at Boro and has been involved at international level which speaks for itself.
“After the amazing impact Jordan Amissah made for us last season we wanted a player with a similar background and profile to him.
“Max will literally be a standout performer for us with his imposing frame and fantastic ability, and we can’t wait to start working with him.”
