Spennymoor Town Ladies have completed a double transfer swoop over the weekend with boss Billy Shackleton adding Steph Doonan and Tia Brown to his squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
Doonan arrives to enhance competition in the goalkeeping department, while exciting winger Brown has won a place in the squad after impressing during a pre-season trial.
“I’m delighted to get Steph over the line because she’s a player we have been targeting for a while,” revealed Shackleton.
“It’s crucial that we have two high quality goalkeepers battling it out for the Number One spot and I am positive that is what we have now as well as two girls who will support each other through the season.
“Likewise, we’re really happy that Tia has agreed to come in because she’s a player who impressed us from the first moment we saw her in pre-season.
“She’s a young player so the staff here have the job to provide the environment that will challenge and improve her and that’s exactly what Tia will get as she makes this next step in her career.”
Both new recruits were involved for Moors as they drew 3-3 with Redcar Town Ladies in their latest friendly on Sunday ahead of the new NERWFL season which begins next month.
“I’m really excited to sign for Spennymoor – I believe this is the right club for me to progress and improve because the attitude and drive towards success is outstanding,” said Doonan.
Brown added: “I’m really excited for the start of the season because this is a great opportunity for me. The past few weeks in training, I can see how determined and focussed all the girls are.”
Meanwhile, the Ladies have been drawn at home to Gateshead in the preliminary round of the Durham County Cup. The fixture will be played at Houghall Campus at East Durham College on Sunday 18th September (1.30pm kick-off).
