Preview: Farsley Celtic v Moors

Farsley Celtic v Spennymoor Town
Saturday 24th September 2022, 3pm
National League North
The Citadel

In Opposition
Farsley Celtic have tasted victory just once so far in the new campaign and lie third bottom in the National League North table ahead of Moors’ visit to The Citadel this weekend.

The West Yorkshire outfit trounced Brackley 3-0 away from home a month ago but weren’t able to fully build on that result and have collected just two points from the last available 12.

Kian Scales looked to have secured a crucial away win at Blyth Spartans last time out in the league when he netted on 77 minutes, but the hosts grabbed a devastating last-gasp leveller to bring it back to 1-1.

The Celt Army also suffered disappointment in the FA Cup in midweek when they were knocked out at home to AFC Fylde having drawn in the original tie away at Mill Farm.

Farsley kept their place in National League North in dramatic circumstances on the final day of last term when, despite being beaten by Boston United, they stayed up when two late goals from Curzon Ashton secured victory over Guiseley who dropped bottom and were relegated.

However, experienced boss Russ Wilcox will be hoping that he can guide his team away from the danger zone in the coming months and avoid any kind of repeat of the tension that surrounded their 2022/23.

One To Watch
Kian Scales has been making an impression on Farsley Celtic fans since joining the club from Bradford City in August on a loan deal which has since been extended until the New Year.

The promising midfielder netted his second goal in Celt Army colours in their last league outing at Blyth Spartans last Tuesday night and Moors will need to keep him quiet on Saturday.

Still only 20, the Bantams’ Academy graduate has been joined at Farsley by fellow Bradford youngster Bobby Pointon – both of whom will come up against teammate Finn Cousin-Dawson this weekend who is on loan with Moors.

Head To Head
Saturday’s game will be the fifth competitive encounter between the two clubs and Moors have enjoyed the better of it historically having won three of the previous four meetings.

Indeed, last term they did the double over their West Yorkshire opponents, running out 2-1 winners at The Citadel in March after handing out a 6-0 thumping when they visited The Brewery Field the previous September.

Farsley’s only success came in the first ever meeting back in August 2019 when they enjoyed a 1-0 triumph on home soil at the start of the ill-fated 2019/20 campaign.

On The Whistle
William Davis will be the man in the middle for Saturday’s National League North trip to The Citadel and he will be assisted by Adam Burgess and James Tewson.
