Preview: Moors v Southport

We turn the focus on this evening’s National League North action with a closer look at Southport’s visit to The Brewery Field.

Spennymoor Town v Southport

National League North
The Brewery Field

In Opposition
A fine away win at Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday lifted Southport up to ninth in the National League North table ahead of this evening’s trip to The Brewery Field.

Liam Watson’s side have recovered from an inconsistent start to the new campaign to run into some excellent form in recent weeks during which they have won four of their last five games.

The big difference is that they’re now finding goals easier to come by having put four past Bradford (Park Avenue) at the start of October before notching three in their win at Farsley Celtic.

Indeed, they are now the top scorers in the division away from home having hit the net 13 times – thought they do give opportunities at the other end as they have also conceded 15 on their travels.

One To Watch
Southport supporters were thrilled when it was confirmed that striker Marcus Carver was returning to the club on loan from Scunthorpe United in September.

The popular front man helped himself to 21 goals in 35 starts during his last stint with The Sandgrounders and that form was enough to convince Hartlepool United to pay an undisclosed fee in January.

He’s already got back among the goals for Southport too, netting the second in their weekend win at Kidderminster, so Moors’ defenders will have to be on their guard this evening.

Head To Head
Moors have played nine times against Southport over the years and are still undefeated against the Haig Avenue outfit with a record of five wins and four draws.

Last season’s meeting at The Brewery Field was a cracker as Southport twice came from behind to level before Rob Ramshaw finally won it for Moors ten minutes from time.

On The Whistle
The man in the middle for this evening’s National League North fixture against Southport will be Dane McCarrick, and he will be assisted by Paul Mosley and Kirk Freeth.
