Ladies Hit Six To Progress In Cup

Moors Ladies booked their place in the Second Round of the Durham County Cup in emphatic fashion on Sunday with a 6-0 triumph at Boldon CA.

Billy Shackleton’s side went into the tie in good form and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to six games on the back of a clinical performance against their lower-league hosts.

An early injury to Amber Hopps forced Moors into a change and substitute Meg Foster wasted no time announcing her arrival when she drove home the opening goal after good work from Katy Hemmingway.

Just after the half hour mark it was 2-0. Loren Salkeld did well to find a pass to Hemmingway and she calmly squared for Foster to ram home her second of the afternoon.

A third Moors goal arrived on 38 minutes when Allice Welch-Davison sent Lily Jackson through on goal and the teenager kept her cool to squeeze an effort under the goalkeeper for 3-0.

Jackson could have added to her tally just before and then just after half time but was denied by the keeper, though Moors did make it 4-0 when Holly Middleton was in the right place at the right time to fire home a loose ball.

Shackleton’s side were now in full control and helped themselves to a fifth goal midway through the second half when Sophie Farrugia’s shot found the net despite the keeper getting her fingertips to it.

Boldon showed spirit to enjoy a good spell of pressure which saw shots come in from long-range and a fine save from Moors keeper Nicole Scott to protect the clean sheet.

Welch-Davison then sprung down the other end as another incisive pass from Welch-Davison set Hannah Knox through on goal and her shot took a deflection before looping into the net to make it 6-0.

“We’re in the next round and we have a chance to go on a bit of a run now,” said Shackleton afterwards.

“We need to ensure we keep this momentum going next week when we return to the league action against Pools Youth.”
