Moors Ladies will round-off a memorable season on Sunday afternoon when they face-off with NERWFL Northern Division title rivals Wallsend Reserves at Kirkley Park (2pm kick-off).
Billy Shackleton’s side have produced an astonishing campaign of football and defeat to Hartlepool United on the opening day now seems a long time ago.
Moors clinched their promotion to the Premier Division with a 5-0 thrashing of Pools Youth a fortnight ago and smashed seven unanswered goals past Washington on Thursday night.
The hunger with which they’re ending the season underlines the determination from within the group to succeed this term and that will serve them well as they make the step up in 2023/24.
However, they still do have a slim chance of landing the title if they can defeat second-placed Wallsend in their final game of the season this Sunday.
Their hosts sit a point behind Moors in the table but with two games in hand they are still able to overtake Shackleton’s side even if they are defeated on home soil this weekend.
Moors ran out 3-0 winners when the sides met earlier in the season but will need to produce their very best form if they are to replicate that result against Wallsend this time around.
“We know all we can do is put some pressure on Wallsend,” said Shackleton.
“They’re a very good team and they have had a fantastic season. All we can do now is win our games and then hope they slip up in the ones they have remaining.
“It would be brilliant to go there and win and that see us take the title, but I think you have to give credit where it’s due and Wallsend have been superb this year – I am looking forward to seeing the two sides going head-to-head on Sunday.”
Shackleton will be without full-back Olivia Mole who picked up an ankle injury in the win over Pools Youth, while Kira Whittle, Hannah Knox and Katy Hemmingway are all also unavailable for selection.
Kick-off is at 2pm on Sunday and admission is free for all supporters at Kirkley Park.
