Moors have pulled off a huge transfer coup with the news that experienced goalkeeper James Montgomery is to join the Club on a permanent deal for the 2023/24 campaign.
The 29-year-old spent last season with Gateshead where had become a huge fans’ favourite due to a catalogue of eye-catching performances over three spells at The International Stadium.
A former Middlesbrough youngster, Montgomery moved on to Guiseley where his form earned him a move to Telford United and he went on to make 66 league appearances for The Bucks.
In January 2017, Gateshead stumped up an undisclosed fee to bring to Sunderland born stopper back to the region and his 12 clean sheets helped them maintain their position in the National League.
His performances saw him selected for England C and also earned him a shot at the Football League with Forest Green Rovers where he spent a season before moving on to AFC Fylde in the summer of 2019.
In October 2020 he returned to Gateshead for a second stint and went on to wear the colours of Chesterfield before once again signing for The Tynesiders last March.
“He’s a marquee signing for us, there’s no doubt about that,” said Assistant Manager, Lewis Dickman.
“The wealth of experience that he brings at this level and above and how good a goalkeeper he is means this is a real coup for the Football Club and shows the ambition with which we’re moving forward.
“We have discussed as a staff what we want from that position and have decided to go with an experienced goalkeeper this season and James brings great quality to the group too.
“He will be a leader within the squad, and he is a fantastic character who will blend really well with the dynamics of the dressing room we have.
“We’re delighted he’s chosen to sign for Spennymoor, and we can’t wait to begin working with him.”
Montgomery’s contract with Moors will begin later his month following the expiry of his deal at Gateshead and is subject to the usual approval from The Football Association and National League.
