New To The Division: South Shields

We complete our summer study of the clubs joining us in National League North for the new campaign with our shortest journey of them all…

How did they get here?
South Shields clinched their place in National League North in some style last season when they wrapped up the Northern Premier League title with two games to spare.

Former Sunderland star Kevin Phillips led Shields to glory, with their elevation to the sixth tier of English football confirmed on the back of a win at Whitby Town in the second week of April.

It marked yet another step up for an ambitious club who have now celebrated promotion for the fourth time in nine seasons and the first time they have reached National League North.

Where do they play?
Mariners Park, or as it is known now 1st Cloud Arena, has been home to South Shields since 1992, although it has undergone significant development over the years.

The most recent new stand was opened during the summer of 2022 and took the capacity of the impressive stadium up to around 4,000.

Who is in charge?
Former Sunderland and Middlesbrough star Julio Arca took the reins at South Shields during the summer following the surprise departure of Kevin Phillips.

Arca, who won promotion as a player three times with The Mariners between 2015 and 2018, has drafted in former Moors boss Tommy Miller as his Assistant Manager at 1st Cloud Arena.

When did we last meet?
This season will see the sides share a division for the first time since 2012/13 when Moors won promotion from Northern League Division One and Shields were relegated.
