Josh Doherty Joins Spennymoor Town

Josh Doherty has become Moors’ eighth signing of the summer after he agreed a deal at The Brewery Field following his departure from South Shields.

The Northern Ireland born left-back started his career on the books of local club Ards before earning a move to England with Watford in 2012.

Doherty moved on to Leyton Orient in 2016 and gained some further senior experience with a loan spell at Altrincham before returning to Northern Ireland for a spell.

In 2017 he was given another shot at English football when Crawley Town took him to Sussex and he went on to make almost 100 appearances in all competitions over the next four years.

A former Northern Ireland youth international, Doherty joined Colchester United on loan in 2021 before agreeing a permanent switch to Barnet.

In 2022 he signed terms with Portadown but returned to England to join South Shields later that year and spent last term on the books at 1st Cloud Arena.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have Josh here,” said Moors boss Jamie Chandler.

“He’s got great experience having played in the Football League and he fits the bill technically in terms of what we were looking for from a left-footed player so that gives us good balance alongside the addition of Reece Staunton.

“Everyone we have spoken to about Josh have said he possesses real quality, physically he can get up and down the flank and has very good delivery as well, which will be a real asset for us.”

Doherty has been handed squad number 27 and his move to Moors is subject to the usual Football Association and National League clearance.
