Report: Moors 1 Fleetwood Town U21s 1

Moors played out an entertaining 1-1 draw against Fleetwood Town Under-21s on Saturday afternoon in their second friendly of the pre-season campaign.

Glen Taylor was on target with a trademark free-kick to give Jamie Chandler’s side a first half lead but the visitors got back on level terms in the second half and the game finished all-square.

It was Fleetwood who got on the front foot first in the game played at Newcastle Blue Star’s Scotswood Sports Centre, but a powerful shot from ten yards smacked the post and stayed out.

Moors responded with an opening created by Corey McKeown, who’s clipped ball freed Will Harris in behind the Town defence, but his shot went agonisingly wide of the post.

Taylor had a sigher on 32 minutes when he cut inside to curl a shot just wide, but he found his range from a free-kick two minutes later when McKeown rolled the ball to him, and the front man smashed a low drive into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

It could have been 2-0 shortly afterwards when a clever Rob Ramshaw pass gave Harris another sight of goal, but the Fleetwood keeper advanced quickly to close the angle and the shot dropped just too high.

It was all change at the break as Chandler replaced his full eleven and Connor Shanks was quickly involved in the action as he cut inside dangerously onto his left foot but the low drive was excellently turned round the post by the keeper.

Fleetwood grabbed their equaliser just after the hour mark when an initial shot was parried by Moors’ trialist keeper and dropped out to the edge of the area from where it was drilled back into the bottom right corner of the net.

Shanks had a chance to make it 2-1 almost immediately when the ball fell kindly to him on the right side of the penalty area, but his well struck shot was brilliantly parried away by the keeper.

Josh Doherty cut inside from the left to hit a right-footed shot which flashed just too high, before James Curtis headed over from eight yards after being found by Mark Anderson’s out swinging corner.

Anderson himself went close to restoring Moors’ lead a minute from time when he engineered a shooting opportunity 25 yards out but curled the effort just wide and it finished 1-1.
