Moors were brought crashing down to earth with a bump at The Brewery Field on Saturday as newly promoted Tamworth earned a 4-1 triumph in County Durham.
The Lambs were full value for the three points after putting on a powerful performance, particularly in the second half, as Moors failed to build on last weekend’s opening day win at Banbury United.
Jamie Chandler made two changes to his starting eleven as James Curtis returned to the side and Keenan Ferguson was handed his debut after both missed out through injury last weekend.
And Moors began solidly enough and enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the early exchanges, Glen Taylor nodding over a presentable chance after Ben Pollock’s header back across from a corner.
However, Tamworth hinted at what was to come when Kyle Finn headed over when unmarked and Ben Acquaye flashed an effort too high after a dangerous cross from the right.
The danger told in first half stoppage time when James Montgomery could only parry away a delivery from the right and Nathan Tshikuna showed great quickness of mind to lob a header back over the stranded keeper for 1-0.
The Lambs came out flying after the break too and doubled their advantage on 48 minutes when Acquaye found the space to strike an unstoppable shot across Montgomery and into the top right corner of the net.
Things got even worse midway through the second half when Finn picked the ball up on the edge of the box, dropped a shoulder to move on to his left foot and drilled in Tamworth’s third.
Moors were struggling to rediscover their composure and were hit with a fourth goal 15 minutes from time when visiting skipper Ben Milnes’ flashed a ferocious dipping drive beyond Montgomery from distance.
There was one bright spot on a largely forgettable afternoon for Moors when summer signing Will Harris volleyed home first goal for the Club a couple of minutes later to reduce the arrears.
