Moors must travel to Marine for a replay after the Merseysiders twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw in a pulsating FA Cup tie at The Brewery Field on Saturday.
Jamie Chandler’s men were 1-0 and 2-1 up thanks to second half goals from Joshua Popoola and Glen Taylor, but they couldn’t see the job through, and the tie will be played in Marine on Tuesday.
Marine set their stall out from the first whistle and could have gone in front inside 90 seconds when a whipped free-kick from Sol Solomon was fingertipped over the bar by James Montgomery.
Moors took time to settle but could have score themselves when Danny Greenfield scampered in behind to clip a shot over the goalkeeper only for it to be cleared off the line by a recovering defender.
Manasse Mampala sent a looping header just wide of Montgomery’s goal as the visitors continued to play with confidence before the cup tie really game to life after the break.
Popoola – on loan from Stockport County – was in the right place at the right time to score in successive games when Greenfield’s corner from the left fell at the young defender’s feet for 1-0 on 61 minutes.
However, Marine answered back almost immediately when a cross in from the right wasn’t fully cleared and Mampala swept home a wonderful volley to make it 1-1.
The tie looked to be over when Sam Fielding – just off the bench – whipped a low ball in from the right which a defender diverted into the path of Taylor who clipped a beautiful finish home to make it 2-1 with his fifth goal of the season.
But again, Marine responded. A deep free-kick was aimed towards Will Russ, who was challenged by James Curtis and the referee pointed to the spot, allowing Solomon the chance to level as he squeezed his penalty past Montgomery.
