Moors Youngsters In FA Youth Cup Action

Moors Under-18s begin their FA Youth Cup campaign on Tuesday night when they make the trip to face Billingham Town in their rearranged tie at Bedford Terrace (7.30pm kick-off).

The game was originally scheduled for last Tuesday but heavy rain meant the pitch was deemed unplayable following a lunchtime inspection and it was rearranged for this evening.

Last season, the Club’s youngsters made history by embarking on a fantastic run in the competition which took them to the First Round proper where they were beaten by Barnsley at Oakwell.

Now Shane Gavin’s squad are hungry for more success in 2023/24 but they face a difficult start on the road as they square up with Billingham in First Round Qualifying.

“We’re really looking forward to the game and the opportunity it brings to play in the FA Youth Cup again,” coach Gavin told us.

“Selecting the squad has been very tricky because, even with a few players missing, we have a very strong group this year.

“We know we have a big challenge in front of us against a Billingham Town side who beat us in last season’s County Cup Final so hopefully we can go out there and put in a strong performance.”

Head of Football Jason Ainsley and Academy Manager Gavin Cogdon are both heading to Bedford Terrace to support the Under-18s as they look to create more memories in a special competition.

“I’m really looking forward to watching what I think will be a great game of football,” said Cogdon.

“It’s been brilliant to hear supporters at the First Team games asking about the FA Youth Cup this year – that’s a testament to what the young lads achieved with their run last season.

“In cup football nothing is guaranteed, especially because we know how talented and organise Billingham Town will be, so it makes for a great cup tie.

“I hope the lads get a good turnout from Moors fans and it would be brilliant to see a few come down and cheer the team on as they look to get a good result.”

Kick-off is at 7.30pm at Bedford Terrace, with gates opening from 6.30pm.
