Academy Side Claim Dramatic Leeds Win

Moors’ improving Academy Team collected another impressive three points on Wednesday afternoon as they won 3-2 at Leeds United.

Having endured a tricky start to their first season in National Youth League North Division One, the youngsters thrashed Macclesfield Whites 10-1 at The Brewery Field last week.

That first win of the campaign clearly injected confidence into the squad, and they continued where they left off with a gutsy performance on the road against Leeds.

The game at The Coach Ground was only three minutes old when Moors got their noses in front as Travis Dixon’s powerful drive from distance flashed under the keeper to make it 1-0.

It got even better for the young Moors outfit on 12 minutes when Leyton Hope got through on goal and tucked a neat finish under the out-rushing keeper to double the advantage.

Gavin Cogdon’s men had played against the wind during the first half, but Leeds came out the stronger in the second period and immediately got on the front foot.

The hosts, managed by former Leeds and Coventry forward Noel Whelan, got themselves a foothold in the game when Moors conceded a penalty just after the hour which they converted for 2-1.

There was real drama on 72 minutes when Moors whipped a corner in which appeared to be handled on the line, but the referee ignored the protests and Leeds counter-attacked quickly to snatch a goal and level things up at 2-2.

It looked as though the points would be shared as the contest moved into the final minute, but Moors kept on going and a pinpoint cross was met by Travis Dixon and his bullet header found the net to clinch a brilliant last-gasp win.
