Moors Ladies Held To Draw At Barnsley

Meg Foster was on target for Moors Ladies as they picked up a point in a hard fought NERWFL Premier Division encounter with Barnsley at Oakwell on Sunday.

Moors were rarely at their best on the day, but the result kept them second in the table, a point behind new leaders South Shields following Sunderland West End’s surprise weekend defeat.

Barnsley got on top in the early stages at Oakwell and Sophie Miller in the Moors goal was forced into a couple of excellent saves to prevent the hosts from moving in front.

However, the deadlock was broken on 25 minutes when Moors lost possession at the back which allowed the Barnsley striker through on goal and she finished well, despite the best efforts of Miller to keep it out.

Moors began to find their feet as the first half drew to a close and they were back on level terms just before the break when Alex Saunders’ free-kick hit the bar and Foster was able to fire home from the rebound from the edge of the area.

Autumn Colledge and Shannon Reed both came close to putting Moors in front in the second half, while a barrage of Caitlin Bates’ corners were repelled by some excellent Barnsley defending.

Substitute Lily Jackson could have snatched a Moors winner late on only to be denied by a wonderful last-gasp challenge from a Tykes defender.

Billy Shackleton’s side continued to press for a winner and could have had some joy, but Courtney Mole’s teasing cross fell just too far in front of the Moors attackers and Barnsley were able to clear.

“After the start we had, you can argue we’ve had a good result,” admitted Shackleton afterwards.

“It’s been a brilliant occasion to come to a stadium like and, although I am disappointed not to have won the game, I am pleased we didn’t lose it.

“We think we did enough to get all three points in the end but some days it just doesn’t fall for you.”

Moors will now turn their attentions back to the FA Cup when they make a First Round trip to face Blackpool next Sunday afternoon.
