Junior Mondal Joins Spennymoor Town

Moors have completed their third signing of the summer with confirmation that exciting attacker Junior Mondal has agreed terms on a move to The Brewery Field.

Comfortable in a central striking role or out wide, Mondal originally came through the ranks at Middlesbrough’s famed Academy having joined The Teessiders at 11 and progressing through to take up a scholarship there in 2013.

His promise saw him sign his first professional contact at The Riverside Stadium the following year and he began featuring for an Under-21s side which won Premier League Division 2 in 2014/15.

A debut in senior football followed in 2016/17 when Mondal made three appearances in the League Cup, while he also became a regular in Boro’s Under-23 Development League side.

After being released by Middlesbrough, the talented star had signed for Moors in 2017 but went on a dual registration to Whitby Town where he scored 15 times in 48 outings.

In 2019, he won an 18-month contract with then League Two outfit Forest Green Rovers after impressing during a pre-season trial, and he went on to play his part as they made the play-offs.

Mondal moved on to AFC Fylde in 2020 and then spent two seasons on the books at local rivals Darlington, during which time he spent several loan spells with Marske United.

A return to Whitby emerged in 2023 and he picked up where he left off with The Seasiders, scoring important goals against Chelmsford City and Bristol Rovers as they made it to the First Round Proper of last season’s FA Cup.

“It’s fantastic to bring Junior to the Club,” admitted Moors Assistant Manager, Ian Clark.

“I have worked with him previously when he was with Spike and I at Marske United, and he will bring plenty of exciting qualities to our squad.

“Junior is proven at this level and also has experience of playing in higher divisions too, and we feel like we’re getting him at a really good age for him to show what he can do.

“He has all the attributes we were looking for. He’s quick, he’s strong, he will create chances, he will work hard for the team, and he will fit perfectly into the system we want to play.”

Mondal follows former Whitby teammate Dan Rowe and Bishop Auckland full-back Dane Burlace in arriving at The Brewery Field this summer ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
