Moors were condemned to their second defeat of the warm-up campaign on Tuesday night as Ashington ran out comfortable winners at Woodhorn Lane.
The Colliers were good value for their impressive 4-0 triumph as Graeme Lee’s men struggled to find any kind of rhythm during their trip to Northumberland.
Things started badly for Moors when Brad James pulled up during the warm-up and his place in goal was taken by youngster Ryan Johnson.
With just nine minutes on the clock the home side were in front. Some tidy football on the right opened Moors up and Andrew Cartwright produced a clinical finish for 1-0.
It took time for Moors to rediscover their composure, but they could have been back on level terms eight minutes before the break after good work from Corey McKeown down the right but the trialist in the middle couldn’t convert the chance.
Lee’s side got even closer to equalising a minute later when Matty Dolan curled a free-kick over the wall only to see it crash back off the upright and Ashington survived.
The hosts doubled their lead nine minutes into the second half. More good football down the right produced an opening for Cyril Giraud and he fired home a tidy finish into the top right corner of the net.
With just less than 20 minutes remaining, the game was over when Ashington were awarded a penalty after a tug by Ben Beals. Eddie Thomas converted from the spot to make it 3-0.
Ashington were enjoying themselves now and added a fourth goal with 10 minutes left after working the ball quickly into the box for Jay Errington to drive home.
