Glen Taylor scored both goals as Moors got back on track with a deserved 2-0 triumph over Southport to clinch an 11th consecutive win at The Brewery Field.
Graeme Lee’s side have not dropped a single point on home soil since February but were made to work hard for the three points on Tuesday evening by a Southport side who arrived in County Durham boasting a 100% record this term.
However, two clinical strikes from front man Taylor proved the difference as Moors responded in positive fashion following the weekend’s disappointing defeat at Leamington.
A competitive first half saw Moors enjoy the majority of possession and create the best of the openings but without really finding a way to test visiting keeper Chris Renshaw.
Reece Staunton stormed between two Southport defenders on the left of the box before fizzing a low ball through the six-yard area but sadly none of his teammates were able to apply a finishing touch and the danger passed.
Taylor could have opened the scoring ten minutes before the break when he met Matty Dolan’s free-kick with a powerful only to see it flash wide of the upright, while Moors Number 9 also drove a shot on goal which was blocked.
Things got trickier for the visitors at the start of the second half as Moors really began to apply some pressure, winning a flurry of corners as they began to lay siege to the Southport goal.
The pressure told on 57 minutes. A good move down the right saw Callum Ross shovel a great cross into the box from the right and Taylor moved across his marker at the front post before applying the perfect glancing header to direct the ball into the bottom corner of the net for 1-0.
The excellent Olly Dyson then brought a wonderful diving save from Renshaw when he found space to drive on goal from the right corner for the penalty area as Moors remained on the front foot.
Danny Lloyd responded with a ferocious left-footed strike from the edge of the area which swerved wickedly as it flashed a yard over Brad James’ cross bar.
However, Lee’s men remained the most likely and Rob Ramshaw came close with a curling effort which slipped wide of the post, while Taylor nodded another headed attempt just off target.
Southport shuffled their pack with some changes to try and get back into the game but Taylor doubled Moors lead on 76 minutes. The ball was played into the edge of the area where Ramshaw was able to divert it into Taylor’s path and he unleashed a venomous drive low into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
Renshaw had to stand tall to keep out a vicious Taylor drive in added time to prevent him helping himself to a hat-trick but the damage was already done and Moors continued their incredible form on home soil with victory.
