The Club is delighted to confirm the appointment of Brent Smithson as the new Manager of Spennymoor Town Ladies.
Smithson has been a driving force behind the successes enjoyed by our Ladies Team over the last two seasons in his capacity as Assistant Manager.
Moors Ladies won a wonderful promotion from the NERWFL Northern Division under Smithson’s watch in 2022/23 before enjoying an eye-catching debut season in the Premier Division.
Not only did they firmly establish themselves at the higher level, they also emerged as candidate for a second successive promotion and ended last term as runners-up.
Following the departure of former boss Billy Shackleton last week, the Club has acted swiftly to promote Smithson to the top job, and he joined Interim Manager Gavin Cogdon in the dugout for Sunday’s game at South Shields.
“I am over the moon to be taking over as Manager,” Smithson told us.
“Spennymoor Town is an absolutely amazing club, and we have such a passionate group of girls who are simply fantastic to work so I can’t wait to get going.
“The support that this Club gives to the Ladies section is unrivalled; there is no other club at our level that gives so much backing and that was a driving factor in me taking the job on.
“It’s been a fantastic journey and, although this step up to the Manager role came out of the blue, I am really keen to build on the successes we’ve had over the last two years.
“We’ve got quite a lot of new players to bed in this season and the more they come together as the group the better we’ll get because individually they are all very talented footballers.
“The girls have already been playing the way I want to play over the last couple of seasons so it’s just about galvanising that now and trying to improve as much as we can.”
Smithson will now lead training in the coming week as Moors Ladies prepare for their first home game of the new campaign against Hull United at The Brewery Field on Sunday.
“We are thrilled that Brent has agreed to take over as Manager,” explained the Club’s Managing Director, Ian Geldard.
“Brent has represented the Club flawlessly over the last two years, is a man of real integrity and he has the respect of everyone in the dressing room.
“We’ve had some great fun watching the Ladies enjoy so much success in recent seasons and Brent has played a huge part in that.
“We’re really excited about the future for our Ladies section not only on a First Team level but with the addition of our Reserves and Development sides this summer too.
“To have a man with the principles and character of Brent leading that is fantastic for the Club and we’ll make sure he’s given the support he needs to succeed.”
