Moors Ladies Clinch Impressive Home Win

Moors Ladies returned to form in fine style on Sunday afternoon when Hull United were swept away by a brilliant performance in torrential rain at The Brewery Field.

Autumn Colledge led the way for Brent Smithson’s side as she helped herself to two goals, while Holly Doogan and Hannah Knox also hit the net in a superb 4-1 triumph.

Moors made their intent clear from the first whistle and Lucy McIntosh almost made it 1-0 within three minutes when she nodded just over from a pinpoint Knox corner.

It took just 8 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, though. Summer signing Jess Dawson made her debut after shrugging off an ankle problem and she picked out Autumn Colledge on the edge of the box who looped an effort over the keeper for 1-0.

As the rain continued to pour, Moors remained on the front foot and Knox stung the Hull keeper’s palms with a firm drive from a direct free-kick.

It was 2-0 just before the half-hour. Doogan’s cross was stood up to the far post where Colledge arrived with a brilliant diving headed to double Moors’ advantage.

The setback of conceding a second had Hull wobbling and it was soon 3-0 when Autumn Colledge turned provided with a lofted ball through for Doogan and she fired past the keeper to celebrate her first goal for the Club.

College could have had her hat-trick before half time when she nodded just over the bar, while Brooke Newton also came close with a powerful drive from the edge of the area.

Moors made sure of the points early in the second half when Knox deceived the Hull keeper with a free-kick which crept into the net at the near post from a tight angle to make it 4-0.

The visitors, to their credit, responded immediately to pull a goal back but Moors remained the more dangerous in an attacking sense with Lauren Gray twice coming close to scoring a fifth.

Moors were thankful to a terrific double save from goalkeeper Sophie Miller on 74 minutes to help protect their three-goal lead and see them through to the final whistle.

“I thought we were really good in the first half today,” said Smithson afterwards.

“We dominated the ball, we kept possession really well and everything we’d been working on in training seemed to come out on the pitch which saw us score some good goals.

“The conditions were torrential, but the pitch held up well and it didn’t stop us wanting to play football. We created some great opportunities to score more goals.

“The lasses dug deep in the second half and we saw the game out comfortable in the end and I was really pleased with the result.”
