Moors Academy side continued their fine start to the new season as they defeated Yorkshire Amateur in a dramatic penalty shootout at Whitworth Park on Wednesday.
Having tasted victory in each of their two league outings in the fresh campaign, Matty Dolan’s youngsters switched their attentions to the cup but were just as keen to prevail.
Moors started the game brightly and began to dominate possession in the early stages against a physical Yorkshire Amateur outfit.
Chances were at a premium, but Leighton Hope came mightily close to opening the scoring on 25 minutes only for the visiting keeper to pull off a wonderful save to keep his effort out.
However, Moors finally got their breakthrough just before half time. Hayden Oakes continued his goalscoring form when he got on the end of Hope’s inviting cross to fire home for 1-0.
Dolan’s side showed real determination to withstand some pressure from Yorkshire Amateurs during the second half as they visitors continued to test them with a direct approach.
But Moors held their own and then grabbed a second goal on 75 minutes when Oakes turned provides to set up Alex Beattie who darted beyond the Amateur defence before finishing coolly under the onrushing keeper.
However, Yorkshire Amateur set up a tense finale when they pulled a goal back on 80 minutes and, despite Moors’ best efforts, the visitors then plundered a leveller five minutes from time with a stunning strike from outside of the area.
Extra time was a tense affair but neither side could find a further breakthrough which meant that the tie was decided by a penalty shootout.
Moors came through the spot-kicks to win 4-3, as Dylan Jones rifled home the winning penalty to send Dolan’s battling youngsters into the next round.
