Moors Ladies booked their place in the First Round Proper of the Women’s FA Cup for the second season in succession after a brilliant win over SJR Worksop on Sunday.
Katy Hemmingway scored twice, while Autumn Colledge and Holly Doogan were both also on target as Moors enjoyed another superb victory at The Brewery Field.
The 4-0 triumph has now set up an exciting trip to face Burnley, who operate in the National League’s Northern Premier Division – two levels above Moors in the pyramid.
“To win 4-0 at home and get through to the next round is really pleasing,” said boss Brent Smithson.
“I thought we played really well in the game, but credit to Worksop because they made us work really hard for the victory and it was a battle for long periods.
“In the key moments, I thought we showed the greater composure and make the most of the time and space to produce some really clinical finishing.”
Moors were on top from the off in Sunday’s tie and the dangerous Doogan had a couple of sights of goal in the early stages as Smithson’s side looked to set their stall out.
The breakthrough came on 16 minutes when Jess Dawson did well to win possession high up the pitch and showed the vision to feed Hemmingway who slotted a cool finish beyond the keeper for 1-0.
Dawson and Hemmingway combined again just minutes later as Moors came close to a second only for the visiting keeper to get in the way of Hemmingway’s shot.
Worksop regained a foothold as the half wore on and their pressure forced Moors keeper Sophie Miller into an excellent save six minutes before the break.
There was a high tempo opening to the second period as first Autumn Colledge saw a shot kiss the bar on its way over, before Moors were thankful to some alert defending from Lucy McIntosh who cleared off the line as Worksop threatened to level.
Autumn Colledge then pounced to make it 2-0 just before the hour mark. The visitors failed to deal with a set piece played into their penalty area and Colledge was in the right place to fire a finish into the bottom corner.
Alex Saunders drew a good save from a long-range free-kick and Doogan shot just wide before the third goal did arrive on 69 minutes. A ball over the top was brilliantly latched onto by Doogan who finished superbly to make it 3-0.
Substitute Lily Jackson brough a couple more saves from the Worksop keeper but Hemmingway then added gloss to the victory three minutes from time with a low strike into the net at the end of a lovely passage of play from Moors.
“I want to thank all of the supporters and sponsors who got behind us on Sunday – now we’ll look forward to the next round and give it a good go again.”
