Moors Ladies Beaten In County Cup

A depleted Moors Ladies side bowed out of the County Cup on Sunday after falling to a heavy defeat at the hands of Chester-le-Street Town at The Brewery Field.

Boss Brent Smithson was without a handful of key players for the cup tie against the current NERWFL Premier Division league-leaders, so it was always likely to be an uphill task.

However, The Cestrians took full advantage to enjoy victory over Moors for the second weekend running having taken three points when the sides met in the league seven days previously.

Things had started in promising fashion for Smithson’s side, and they led 1-0 midway through the first half when Holly Doogan reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the visitors’ area to fire home.

Chester-le-Street got back on level terms on 35 minutes when Sophie Miller in the Moors goal was left helpless by a powerful finish into the roof of her net.

The visitors then took control at the start of the second half and scored four goals in the opening 20 minutes of a devastating period just after the break.

Miller made two brilliant saves during the latter stages of the game to prevent more punishment for Moors but their interest in the County Cup had come to an end for another season.
