Moors fought hard in less-than-ideal weather conditions to grind out a useful point away at Peterborough Sports on Saturday afternoon.
It was Rob Ramshaw’s brilliant second half strike that drew Graeme Lee’s men level and prevent the side from leaving PIMS Park empty-handed.
Lee drafted Nathan McGinley in at left-back in place of Reece Staunton who missed out through illness, while Finley Shrimpton started in midfield with Callum Ross suspended.
However, it took the hosts just 12 minutes to power ahead, courtesy of a composed finish from Kaine Felix. The Turbines man slotted home from the edge of the box after some good work down the right allowed the ball to be knocked down into his path, sweeping home to give the home side the lead.
The first half proved to be one of few clear-cut chances, with both teams having little pockets of possession. Front man Michael Gyasi had a shot saved by Brad James while Junior Mondal almost broke free for a one on one, only for the ball to roll just out of his reach.
The hosts finished the first half the strongest however, with centre-back Ryan Fryatt flashing a header wide from an in-swinging corner. That chance that was swiftly followed by a powerful, low effort from Dan Jarvis which James did well to get down to his left and parry away from danger.
The heavens opened as half time came to an end, adding to Moors’ mounting troubles and making their bid to find an equaliser that little bit more difficult.
Chances for The Turbines came and went as Jarvis couldn’t keep his powerful strike down, as and saw it fizz over the bar. Wing-back Bayley McCann tried his luck from a tight angle, but his effort was palmed wide by James.
Suddenly, Moors sprung into life. A quick break down the middle allowed loanee Shrimpton the space to play Mondal in behind. He charged down on goal but was nudged off the ball as he entered the opposition penalty area, with the Moors forward calling for a penalty. The referee did not see any issue with the challenge and play continued.
Lee’s side finally found their goal on 70 minutes, breaking down the hosts defence with a smart cross toward the left from McGinley’s which was helped on by Harris on the penalty spot. The ball landed kindly on the chest of Ramshaw at the back post, who fired a thunderous volley across goal and into the bottom left corner, right in front of the Moors’ travelling fans.
The game set alight, despite the now heavy downpour, and both teams threw everything they could at it during the closing stages to find a winning goal. Moors looked strong on the break, whereas The Turbines also continued to hold a threat.
Matty Dolan had a free-kick tipped over the bar by Peter Crook in the hosts’ net, while a corner at the other end caused real problems as a goal line scramble was just about cleared to safety.
The final chance went the way of Peterborough, as they had a swirling free-kick palmed over by James deep into injury time.
A resolute performance from Moors and a point on the road which will give them something to build on as they head to Marine on Tuesday evening.
