Ladies Enjoy Fantastic Win Over Alnwick

Moors Ladies stormed back from a goal down to clinch a brilliant win over Alnwick Town in a pulsating NERWFL Premier Division encounter at The Brewery Field on Sunday.

Brent Smithson’s side rallied after an early setback on home soil to register their first win of the New Year and move up to fifth in the table.

Moors didn’t let the concession of a goal knock them out of their stride and they were back on level terms just after the half-hour mark when Lily Jackson pounced to score from a corner.

Goalkeeper Sophie Miller then produced a brilliant double save to deny Alnwick and keep the scoreline at 1-1 as the side went in at half time.

Moors came out with a greater intensity at the start of the second half and were ahead within three minutes when Autumn Colledge blasted an unstoppable shot past the keeper.

It got even better for Smithson’s side when they went 3-1 up just before the hour – this time Hannah Knox found the net with the latest in a growing collection of brilliant free-kick goals.

Moors had the ball in the net again a few minutes later when Autumn Colledge bundled home the rebound after Caitin Bates’ drive had come back off the post, but the flag was up for offside.

“It was a really pleasing performance and we’re all delighted,” admitted Smithson afterwards.

“Alnwick are a dangerous team and will fancy their chances of challenging for promotion this season, but we thoroughly deserved the win.

“There were lots of good individual displays out there, but I thought the way we fought for each other as a team and didn’t let our heads drop when we went behind was superb.

“This victory has got to give us the platform and the confidence to go and build a better run of form now and keep climbing the table.”

Moors will now turn their attentions to their next game which comes this Sunday when they will now make the trip to face Chester-le-Street Town at Moor Lane (2pm kick-off).
