Academy Side Show Steel In UFCA Win

Moors Academy side produced a fantastic performance at Consett’s Belle View Stadium on Wednesday to earn an impressive 1-0 win over UFCA Academy.

Matty Dolan’s youngsters were boosted by last week’s eye-catching 5-2 thrashing of Hebburn Town and their confidence showed during Wednesday’s assured display.

Jake Parkinson scored the only goal of the game on 19 minutes, but Moors had other chances to have added to their tally while they also defended strongly to protect the clean sheet.

After a cagey opening to the fixture, it was Moors who broke the deadlock when a fantastic break from midfield by Dan Atkinson opened up the UFCA defence and Parkinson produced a confident finish into the bottom corner.

Zak Blair then burst forward to shoot on goal after some wonderful football down the left, but his effort produced a brilliant point-blank save from the visiting keeper.

Moors came under more pressure in the second half and had to defend with determination – and also relied on a couple of wonderful saves from goalkeeper James Brown.

Ethan Docherty came agonisingly close to making sure of the three points when he thundered a shot off the crossbar after some great work from Adam Yates to break up play and drive forward through midfield.

However, Brown had the final say when he made another brilliant close-range save to deny the visitors a leveller in the closing stages.

“That was a great example of work ethic, attitude and desire,” admitted a delighted Dolan afterwards.

“They showed their quality in the first half and there were some fantastic individual performances throughout the team.

“Then in the second half we really had to dig in and the way they defended was superb – they thoroughly deserved the three points in the end.”
