Alfie Doherty Joins Spennymoor Town

Graeme Lee has continued his summer transfer work after agreeing a deal to sign talented young midfielder Alfie Doherty following his departure from Whitby Town.

The 21-year-old prospect originally came through the ranks at Middlesbrough, joining The Teessiders’ famed Academy when he was an Under-9.

A hard-working and athletic player, he is capable of operating in a number of positions across midfield and will add extra energy to the Moors engine room during 2025/26.

Following his release from The Riverside Stadium in 2023, he was snapped up by Whitby Town and his dynamic performances there made him an instant hit with supporters.

Doherty gained his first senior experience through loan spells at Markse United and Hebburn Town, while he also spent time on loan at Blyth Spartans last season.

“It’s great to be able to bring Alfie into the Football Club,” explained Assistant Manager, Ian Clark.

“The Manager knows him from his Middlesbrough days and he’s a player we identified a couple of years ago as someone to keep an eye on.

“He impressed us with his ability to glide past people and make things happen, so this is a great opportunity for him to come here and showcase his ability at our level.

“We always want high intensity players who can create in the final third and that’s what we’d like to see from Alfie as a young lad who is fit, strong and determined to get better.

“He knows that this is a tough league to come and play in and you have to be mentally and physically strong and I know he’s got those attributes to be a real success here.”

Doherty’s move to The Brewery Field is subject to the usual clearance from The Football Association and the National League.
