Ladies Remain Unbeaten After Thornaby Draw

Moors Ladies continued their encouraging start to the new campaign with a creditable point taken from a 1-1 draw at Thornaby on Thursday evening.

It proved to be an entertaining midweek encounter at Acklam Road with both sides having the opportunity to win but a draw probably reflecting a fair result in the end.

The hosts were the first to threaten with a dangerous ball flashed across the area before Moors responded when Sophie Hodgson drilled a shot just wide of the post.

Young Moors goalkeeper Philippa Hunter made an excellent save when the Thornaby forward escaped through one-on-one, while at the other end the home keeper was also called into action after great link-up between Kelly Garcia and Holly Doogan.

However, Moors did break the deadlock just after the half-hour mark. A great driving run down the right from Shannon Reed opened up space for an intricate ball into Amy Richardson who slotted home for 1-0.

Thornaby came out stronger at the start of the second half and levelled things up on 50 minutes when Jen Knowles curled a shot into the net at the front post.

The game swung one way then the other after that, with Becca Drinkald close to finding a winner 11 minutes from time as Nikita Hemmingway’s side pushed forward.

Neither team could find a decisive moment in the closing stages though and they settled for a point apiece at the end of a hard-fought fixture.
