Ben Beals’ Bede College Academy side enjoyed a fantastic result as they ran out 2-1 winners against Guiseley in their cup tie on Wednesday afternoon.
The youngsters got off to a perfect start when Archie Hughes’ incisive pass presented the chance to Oli Sooderland and he once again kept his cool to find the net with just seven minutes on the clock.
Guiseley responded with spirit and crashed one effort against the cross bar before a brilliant block from Deacon Simpson kept Moors’ lead intact.
The visitors did get back on level terms and looked set to take the tie into extra time before Moors snatched a winner 10 minutes from time. Mike Smith wriggled into the area past three defenders before being upended and he got to his feet and confidently tucked away the resultant penalty.
“It was a battling performance from the lads, and I’m so pleased with them,” said Beals afterwards.
“They never gave up on winning even when we got into the closing stages of the game, so I was delighted when they got the reward of a second goal.
“We’ve had an encouraging start, for sure, but the lads will keep on improving as they get to know each other more – but so far I am really happy with what I’ve seen.”
