Moors’ Academy Side Win Nine-Goal Thriller

Moors’ New College Durham Academy came out on top at the end of an extraordinary nine-goal thriller against Newcastle United Under-19s on Wednesday afternoon.

Matty Dolan’s side stormed into a three-goal lead only for The Magpies to launch an incredible comeback to lead 4-3 before Moors turned on the style to recover their lead and triumph 5-4.

Things started perfectly for Moors when Leighton Hope chased down a back pass and got there before the keeper to calmly finish and make it 1-0.

It wasn’t long before the advantage was doubled as this time Ethan Docherty showed great composure to round the Magpies goalkeeper and find the net.

Moors started the second half in similar fashion and got their third when Hope was brought down inside the area before tucking home the resultant penalty kick himself.

Dolan’s youngsters looked on course for a routine victory, only for Newcastle to begin a sensational comeback which saw them score four goals in 15 minutes to go from 3-0 down to 4-3 up in the blink of an eye.

Moors were stunned into action and got back on level terms when Hayden Oakes made a brilliant burst down the right-hand side to make it 4-4.

Oakes then turned provider when he once again drove forward from midfield, this time intelligently squaring the ball across the box where it struck a luckless Newcastle defender and deflected into the net.

“The lads deserved their win after digging in deep during a bit of a crazy second half,” explained Dolan afterwards.

“There were some brilliant individual performances but, collectively, it was brilliant to see them pick up where they left off before the Christmas break.

“That’s four wins in a row now so the lads are building some good momentum and the confidence they have is showing on the pitch.”
