Moors Ladies finished their season with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Sunderland West End at Whitworth Park Academy on Sunday afternoon.
The result brought the curtain down on Brent Smithson’s reign as Manager and also saw First Team debuts for Hollie Rochester and Emma Curry.
Moors took an early lead when in-form midfielder Becca Drinkald produced a clinical finish to open the scoring with just over a quarter of an hour played.
However, the visitors levelled the game up when they converted from a corner with nine minutes of the first half remaining.
It got even better for West End on the stroke of half time when they got their noses in front with another well-taken goal to lead 2-1 at the break.
Smithson’s side began the second period with a greater determination and created a number of good opportunities to get back on level terms.
Their dominance finally told on 72 minutes when Holly Doogan’s set-pice delivery found the head of Lucy McIntosh to make it 2-2 heading into the closing stages.
There were chances for both sides to have nicked all three points but in the end they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils on the final day.
The result means that Moors finished a creditable sixth place in the NERWFL Premier Division which gives them something to build on as they look to 2025/26.
“I am over the moon with the way the lasses performed,” said Smithson afterwards.
“We created enough opportunities to have won the game, but we came up against a goalkeeper in inspired form this afternoon.
“It was a crazy spell we had before half time to find ourselves 2-1 down but this group are different class, and they stuck together to come back from that.
“It’s been a pleasure to coach them.”
