Moors Ladies fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 at Birtley Town on Sunday and clinch their place in the next round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.
Nikita Hemmingway’s side did things the hard way at The Arrowmark Home Improvement Stadium but goals from Holly Doogan and Meg Elliott secured victory in the end.
Birtley started the better of the two sides and had already been denied by a tidy save from Philippa Huntley before going in front just before the quarter-hour mark.
Doogan then came close to levelling on a couple of occasions as Moors found a foothold in the game, firing an effort just over before seeing another rattle back off the bar.
However, the striker was not denied a third time when she profited from some good work in the build-up from Sophie Hodgson to fire home and make it 1-1 on 38 minutes.
Birtley struck the woodwork in the early stages of the second half, but it was Moors who found the net again just before the hour when Meg Elliott headed Amy Richardson’s inviting free kick into the top corner.
There were chances for both sides in the remaining half hour as first Birtley fired a free kick just too high before another Richardson delivery was met by Hodgson, but the effort flew over.
However, Moors held firm to claim a place in Third Round Qualifying when they will make the trip to face National League side Huddersfield Town.
