Moors’ New College Durham Academy side made it through to the next round of the cup on Wednesday afternoon with a brilliant win over Sunderland Foundation of Light.
Matty Dolan’s youngsters were high on confidence following last week’s win over the same opposition in the league, and they could have gone ahead inside four minutes when Leighton Hope had the afternoon’s first chance.
Hope saw another opportunity come and go and couple of minutes later before turning provider to set-up Dylan Jones for a deserved opening goal with less than 10 minutes on the clock.
More chances came along for Moors who were knocking the ball around with authority, before they finally doubled their lead on 40 minutes when some lovely work from Hayden Oakes opened up the visiting defence and Hope finished neatly.
Dolan’s side were brimming with confidence and Shay Jackson nodded just off target after brilliant build-up on the hour, before Keaton Wright engineered a shooting chance with some great skill only for his effort to draw a fine save from the keeper.
Sunderland gave themselves hope and set up a nervy ending to the encounter when they pulled a goal back late on, but Moors held firm to clinch their place in the next stage of the competition.
“I thought the boys were excellent,” Dolan enthused.
“You can see that they’re really starting to understand their roles and they’re playing with confidence – they deserved that win because they worked so hard for each other.
“It’s a really good sign that that they’re progressing as a team and hopefully they will continue to improve as we go along.
“I also want to wish good luck to Ethan Docherty and Ollie Griffith, who both missed the game today because they’re due to play for the Club in the FA Youth Cup on Friday.”
