Moors ran out winners at the end of a ten-goal thriller against Merthyr Town as The Brewery Field crowd were treated to a National League North classic.
Goals from Lewys Twamley and Abdulai Sambu handed the Martyrs a two-goal advantage, only to be pegged back by Dan Rowe’s header with three minutes of the first half remaining.
All sorts of chaos broke out in the second half, as a brace from Junior Mondal, aswell as goals from Rob Ramshaw, Glen Taylor and a second for Rowe gave Moors all three points, despite a double from Martyrs man, Ricardo Rees.
Merthyr carved out the first real chance of the game when Twamley let fly from the edge of the area, but Ryan Johnson was on hand to deny the number 11.
Dan Jones caused confusion with 20 minutes on the clock as his long throw found Ethan Robson at the back post, only to have his close-range strike brilliantly stopped by Jaimie Cogman.
The visitors got the first goal of the game on the 25-minute mark, as Twamley opened the scoring with a cool finish at Ryan Johnson’s near post.
Paul Michael’s men doubled their lead just seven minutes later. A ball across the face of goal was redirected back across and into the path of Sambu, who tapped home from close range.
A 42nd minute header from Rowe dragged Moors back into the game just before half time, as Ethan Robson grabbed his second assist in as many games since signing on loan from Carlisle United.
After such an eventful first half, Moors looked the more likely of the two sides to grab the next goal, and that they did. A powerful effort from Ramshaw inside the area soared past Jamie Cogman to level the scores after great work from Taylor.
The visitors went close to getting back in front as Sambu got onto the end of an inviting ball towards the back post, only to somehow navigate his effort wide of the mark.
However, The Martyrs did put themselves ahead again just 10 minutes into the second half. Rees got onto the end of an intelligent ball in behind before rounding Ryan Johnson and tapping home from an awkward angle.
Graeme Lee’s side dragged themselves level for the second time in the game when Mondal fired home at the back post. A flicked header from Taylor was saved by Cogman, but fell into the path of the substitute, who made no mistake and drew Moors level.
The madness continued as Taylor got his name on the scoresheet 69 minutes in. The big number 9 profited from a poor clearance before striking low into the bottom corner to put Moors ahead for the first time.
Katia Kouyate almost got another for Moors as he got onto the end of a brilliant cross from Ramshaw, only to see his header claimed by Cogman.
Mondal got another with 16 minutes remaining, as he drove into the box from the right-hand side and slammed home a well-driven effort at Cogman’s near post, adding to the goal-fest.
Four minutes later, Moors had six to their name. A poorly dealt with corner allowed centre-back Rowe space to smash an effort into the roof of the net from inside the area and give his side a three-goal cushion.
It could’ve been seven for Lee’s men with 85 minutes on the clock, as Olly Dyson burst incredibly down the right-hand side and to the byline, before playing a low pass into Taylor, who put an effort just over the bar.
The visitors got one back in the opening stages of injury time, as a scramble around the goalmouth saw Rees flick a smart ball over Johnson and into the back of the net.
A truly astonishing game at The Brewery Field, and a win that sees Moors move up to fourth in the table. Focus now shifts to Tuesday nights fixture, as we welcome AFC Fylde in National League North.
