Moors Ladies booked their place in the next round of the League Cup with an impressive win over Berwick Rangers at The Brewery Field on Sunday.
It was a third win in a row for Nikita Hemmingway’s in-form side and will give them real optimism as they build towards an important run of league fixtures during November.
Moors made their intentions clear from the first whistle and could have gone in front on 11 minutes only for the visiting keeper to brilliantly claw away Ellie Wise’s volley.
However, it was 1-0 on 19 minutes when Amy Richardson’s teasing corner was met by Katy Hemmingway who deflected it into the net to give Moors the lead.
It was 2-0 shortly afterwards as Wise continued her eye-catching start in a Moors shirt when she fired home after great work in the build-up from Sophie Hodgson.
Moors continued to dominate and made it 3-0 on the half hour mark when another Richadson corner caused chaos and Hodgson’s overhead kick fell kindly to Kelly Garcia to convert.
The tie was all but over six minutes into the second half when Shannon Reed’s incisive pass set Garcia in behind and, when her shot was excellently saved, Wise was there to score from the rebound and make it 5-0.
Jenny Priestley thought she had grabbed a sixth only to be denied by the offside flag, before the visitors grabbed a consolation goal six minutes from time.
“I’m really pleased with the way the girls went about the cup tie today,” said boss Hemmingway afterwards.
“We went into the game as favourites, but we had to make sure we did the basics well and didn’t show any complacency, so we’re delighted with the outcome.
“The girls look like they’re hitting top form at a good time now and we need to carry that into an important run of games we’ve got coming up in the remainder of the month.”
