Moors fell to agonising defeat at Alfreton Town as a late fightback saw the home side steal all three points.
Glen Taylor put Moors ahead in the 43rd minute when he curled home an effort from the edge of the box, before late goals from Mark Beck and Billy Fewster turned the game on its head.
Tom Pugh got the game’s first real chance, as he got on the end of a smart ball in behind from Mackenzie Heaney. The loanee took aim but dragged his shot agonisingly wide of the far post.
Moors came forward again through Corey McKeown, only to see his effort from a tight angle deflected behind for a corner.
The hosts got into a good position when Billy Fewster found space on the edge of the area, however, his shot flew well over the bar.
Heaney did well to spin past his man and work his way to the edge of the area, before going for goal with a curled effort, only to see it put behind by an Alfreton man.
Graeme Lee’s side went agonisingly close to opening the scoring with 41 minutes on the clock, as Tom Pugh’s effort deflected over the head Harry Burgoyne and off the underside of the crossbar, yet somehow managing to stay out.
It took just two minutes more to finally break the deadlock, with Taylor grabbing his third goal in as many games. Matty Dolan set the frontman from a free-kick, which he struck first time, slotting into the bottom right corner to give Moors the lead.
Moors took the momentum into the second half, almost doubling their lead just three minutes after the restart. Olly Dyson slipped Pugh into the area with a smart low ball, but saw his effort fly wide of the mark.
Despite a scrappy period in the following 20-or-so minutes, Moors continued to frustrate The Reds’ advances, as Nathan Newall’s low cross into the area was claimed by Bobby Jones.
Max Hunt and Harry Perritt had chances to drag their side level in quick succession but saw both efforts fall wide of the mark.
Moors almost killed the game off with eight minutes remaining, as Pugh’s in-swinging corner found Dan Jones, who just couldn’t keep his header down, as it flew inches over the bar.
New-man Beck equalised on the 84th minute when he fired home from close range. The number 22 saw his initial effort saved by the Moors keeper, but was there to pounce on the follow up.
Alfreton went on to take the lead less than three minutes later. A whipped ball in found Fewster in space, and the midfielder made no mistake, firing home from inside the area to break Moors hearts.
A frustrating end to the game as Moors walk away empty handed. Focus now shifts back onto the FA Trophy, as we host AFC Fylde at The Brewery Field this coming Saturday.
