A dramatic late brace from Glen Taylor saw Moors complete the comeback against 10-man Merthyr Town at The Brewery Field.

The visitors opened the scoring through Kane Simpson’s low effort which escaped Zac Hadi’s grasp, before two goals in 5 minutes from Taylor flipped the game on it’s head and secured all three points for Tommy Miller’s side.

Will Spiers produced the games first real chance on the 10th minute as his header dropped just wide of the left post.

A powerful side-footed effort from Campbell Darcy forced Jaimie Cogman into action soon after, as he got down to his left to parry the strike wide.

Merthyr went close around the 20th minute, as Aneurin Livermore’s effort towards the bottom left corner trickled just wide of the mark, before Simpson’s volley somehow stayed out of Hadi’s goal.

The loanee goalkeeper was forced into some defensive work with five minutes of the half to go, when he slid in to block Morgan Wigley’s attempt on the edge of his penalty area.

Moors were given a boost in first half stoppage time as Spiers was shown a red card. The number 35’s poor challenge on Moors full-back Sam Murray gave the referee no choice but to give Spiers his marching orders.

Despite Moors’ man advantage, it was Merthyr who looked the more likely to score. Jay Williams found space on the right hand side of the penalty area to curl an effort goalwards, only to see it well blocked by Dan Jones.

The Martyrs did go on to take the lead on the hour work, courtesy of an unfortunate moment from Hadi in the Moors net. Simpson worked the ball into space on the edge of the area before firing a low effort on goal, which wrong footed the Moors goalkeeper and bobbled into the back of the net.

George Cantrill almost found the equaliser just four minutes later, when Jenkins’ corner found him in space at the back post. His header looked destined to go in, but was somehow kept out by a Merthyr defender on the goal-line.

Simpson looked to double his tally with just over 20 minutes to play, but was denied by Hadi from an awkward angle.

A good ball into the box from Murray almost caused problems for the Martyrs defence, as the ball met with the head of Richie Bennett. His header, however, landed in the arms of Cogman.

Moors finally found the leveller with just a minute of normal time remaining. The ball fell to substitute, Glen Taylor, who smashed a first time effort into the bottom left corner of the net from the edge of the area to set up an exciting end to proceedings.

Deep into stoppage time, Moors grabbed their winner. An inswinging corner from Jack Jenkins found Dan Jones at the back post, who flicked it into the path of Taylor, who made no mistake from close range and thumped the ball home, sending The Brewery Field into pandemonium.

A dramatic and well earned first victory of the season, as focus now shifts onto Tuesday’s trip to Scarborough Athletic.
